Why would someone throw away a chalk board like this? We were on our way to the park to film our STOPtheMOTION Friday for today and once we passed this little gem on the side of the road, we had to think of a different idea. I am sure it will make appearances quite frequently now. I love when life throws something new at you…whether its taking part in a taco night with friends that turns into a sleepover (thanks Amanda and Mike) or scratching all plans to make a newly found treasure be a part of something special. =) Hope you all have had a great week and have an even greater weekend!!! <3

Lauren+Tony: A Backyard Wedding

July 29th, 2010

There is just something so special and real about Lauren and Tony. They just get each other and after many years together they still know how to have a good time in each others company! Their first look gave me butterflies and it was truly a special moment. From the first time I met Lauren, I instantly clicked with her and when she began telling me her dream of her wedding…mismatched china plates and vases, backyard wedding, beginning of summer…I fell in love. The best part of their wedding and what made it the most special…Lauren and Tonys friends and family. They all chipped in and worked extra hard at making this the most special and unique wedding for Lauren and Tony…because they deserve nothing less. =) Their reception was held in their neighbors backyard…yes that’s right..neighbors…who had the time of their lives hosting this lovely occasion full of amazing cakes, sparklers and lots of dancing! Lauren and Tony were so grateful for everyone who surrounded them and went out of their way to make sure that everyone was enjoying themselves to the fullest!

July 24th, 2010

Today Scott and I were heading home through the Malibu Canyon from an amazing engagement session and I yearned for someone to pinch me. Is this for real? My job is a dream. I get to socialize with awesome people who are in love and inspire me, work next to my best friend, complete my assignments by my feet being crashed upon with the ocean water and I get to view cotton candy skys. I want everyone to feel what I feel upon “leaving the office” and “finishing up the work day”…THAT would make me the happiest girl in the world. =)

This past week 10 wedding photographers traveled to a cool hotel in the middle of wedding season to the desert to relax, swim, tan, take pictures, drink yummy drinks, eat yummy food and get to know one another! We had the time of our lives and had way more fun than any of us imagined we would! We all left tan, inspired and closer friends. =) So happy to have these amazingly talented and beautiful girls featured on this weeks STOPtheMOTION! We customized it a little more for just us!

We had soooo much fun on the east coast this past week! Something I love so much about Vermont is no matter where you look its pure nature. We went on this amazing hike the day before we left and it was one of the highlights of the trip. =) We went to one of Scotts favorite places in the whole world called Bingham Falls and he jumped off from a very high waterfall. He’s crazy. Now for a complete 180..I am heading to Palm Springs with a bunch of my photography girl friends to relax and melt away in the sun for a few days. It will be the cherry on top of this amazing summer of traveling all over! Hope you all have gotten to relax and enjoy your beautiful surroundings this summer!

Today we are back in the office from a week long vacation that consisted mostly of nature. This image was taken at Scotts aunt and uncles house in Danville, Illinois where they are surrounded by nearly 7 foot corn fields all around their property. The simplicity of farms and growing crops intrigues me. Sure, the equipment has become more advanced but the techniques have been the same for centuries…it’s amazing to surround yourself with authenticity and get in touch with where we all came from.

Shannon+Mike: The Album

June 30th, 2010

In 2009, we got introduced to an amazing family. The kind of family that knows every fun fact about eachother..the kind of family that enjoys going to concerts together and will travel far and wide to be there for your childs birth, graduation or just when you are going through hard times. If you have visited our website, you have met Shanelle and Mike and dove into their wedding day. All of our couples know these two…we show their wedding video as a sample and my sample album just happens to be them as well. Needless to say, it was one of our favorite weddings from last year. It’s just so easy to want to show off their wedding…mainly because of the inspirational love, joy and fun that took place that day.

When Shannon, Shanelles sister, informed me that she was getting married to her own Mike, I was ecstatic!! Part of me prayed that I would be asked to photograph their wedding…I just wanted to be invited to the party and hang out with this family again really. When I found out the wedding was going to be in Hawaii and that they wanted me to come along to capture the day, well…I almost crashed my car on the 405 I was so happy.

Shannon and Mikes wedding day was beyond amazing and just a true reflection of who they are and their love for one another. Easy going, fun and intimate are 3 words that come to mind to describe their day. Everyone in this family is so chill…if something goes wrong..it doesn’t phase them. They are so gracious, Shannon ran out in the middle of getting her hair done to let us into the complex when she easily could have asked someone else to do it. They are all there for one another and so present. Everyone in the bridal party made a toast and each one pretty much ended up inaudible due to tears taking over. Honolulu, Hawaii was the best backdrop for their wedding day. The relaxed nature of the culture and the respect and happiness they have for love helped create the perfect setting for the most perfect day!
We feel so blessed to be apart of this family…seriously defines what this life is all about! We love you guys!

I wanted to share Shannon and Mikes special day in album form. I feel that albums tell the story of your wedding day with so much emotion and detail..and its the only way to display your wedding images. Here are a few spreads…feel free to click on the link below to see the full album!

Scott and I have lived in Los Angeles for about a year and a half now. We moved from the east coast for Scott to pursue his career in film and to start our new life together. Settling here has been a hard concept to swallow. Such a huge city that can feel so lonely sometimes can make you miss home rather badly. So many days I used to think that it would be so easy if we just packed up and moved back to Vermont. I was unfortunately against LA for quite some time. The smog, the traffic, the constant parking violations, etc. My friends would ask how it was and I would be rather negative about the city I lived in and I knew that was bad for my soul…and that scared me. How could I possibly make my dreams come true in surroundings that made me so unhappy?

We just had some of our best friends visiting for the week and I seriously fell in love with my city. I couldn’t help but get giddy when showing them Santa Monica, Malibu, Hollywood, Silverlake and even the valley. I got introduced to a whole new side of culture this past week and it made me feel even more alive. While I know I don’t want to live here forever…I know that this is where I need to be right now and I own up to that.My soul is rejuvenated and my dreams are bigger than ever before. My eyes are opened wide and my feet are in the deep end..I’m giving you another chance…Los Angeles.. I’m Yours.

The image above was taken at The Getty Museum. I can’t even describe how intoxicating and new this view was to me. This is when I knew that it was okay to be living in Los Angeles and my exit plan could be put on hold for a few more years.

January 20th, 2010

Erin and Greg are head over heels for one another. They were married in June and were more than happy to put back on their wedding clothes a couple weeks ago for a fun project that Scott and I had in mind! The best part of it all is Erin of This Lovely City is an amazing creative driven individual and has so many wonderful ideas up her sleeve! We collaborated on styling this shoot and I seriously wanted to pitch a tent and live in the hills of Malibu under this cute little tree. If you need help styling your shoots, homes, weddings, events, etc…Erin is your girl to call! She is absolutely amazing!

missed exits and closed ramps.

January 27th, 2010

I miss my exit alot. When I drive..my mind is in the clouds. Way up there hanging out on the bare branches that the birds sing on. Thoughts, plans, goals, dreams, prayers, to-dos race through my mind a mile a minute and WOOOP…there goes my exit..my plan. Now I am off course…but thats okay..there is always the next exit and I can back track to my desired destination..but oh wait..that ramp is closed for construction. Well ..there is always the next one because I cant hop over this median wall and turn around on this crazy road and I am sure sitting in the middle of the highway in defeat isn’t an option with people flying by me at 80mph. I always find when I get to my exit..you know..not the first one but the 2nd or third…that I find something new. I discover something I never knew was there. Whether its a store that has a cool window display, a mexican restaurant that looks reallllly good, or just my optimism as I sit at a red light with no frustration, late to my destination and even find a way to give a smile to the stranger sitting next to me.

We must be thankful for those thoughts that consume our minds that make us miss our exit. When we see a closed ramp we better see that next exit as a new adventure..and run towards it. It’s these missed exits and closed ramps that bring us character, stories, and new discoveries. Focus on the journey…no matter if it doesn’t go as planned.

Hope you all had a beautiful week and an even better weekend!! <3

right now.

February 1st, 2010

Scott and I have been living two very opposite lives the last few days. As I sit on the couch doped up on Nyquil with tissues adorning the ground..Scott is off helping open a brand new yoga studio where he partakes in the activity 1-2 times a day, working hard on busting out some last minute projects and looking for our new place to call our home. While Scotts motivation and love of life inspires me daily it effects me the most on these days when I can’t wait to muster up some energy and take advantage of this wonderful blessing called life.

I hope you see this life as a gift…because as Mr. Gibbard says ” we are just visitors here…we are not permanent”. So we must seek out the fun and excitement during our visit. =)

i live to make you free.

February 4th, 2010

This lyric is from one of my favorite love songs from Gregory and the Hawk called Boats and Birds. I love how the words flow like the true poem they are. To some the song is about holding onto someone who is moving onto another level and the writer is promising to always be there. That is where the true love stands for me. No matter what in life…the people who are there for you through the good times and the bad, are your true loves.

“If you be my boat
I’ll be your sea
a depth of pure blue just to probe curiosity
ebbing and flowing, pushed by a breeze.
I live to make you free…

but you can set sail to the west if you want to
past the horizons until I can’t even see you
far from here where the beaches are wide
just leave me your wake to remember you by”

I find music, just like any artform, up for ones own personal opinion. I love how you look at a painting and your take on it is different from your neighbors, how when you read a poem..each line and word bring a whole different meaning to the poem to the reader, how when you dream…your dreams interpretations are never right or wrong..but just what you think they are..and sometimes we just never know what they truly mean. But while we seek out the “true meaning”, we have our loved ones waiting for us and encouraging us and we know they will always be there pushing us to be our best as we seek out to make our best story possible.

Thats what I see…what do you get out of it?

This image was taken on the very first day of this year during Shayla and Colins session.

the in between.

February 9th, 2010

This is a photo that I took in 2007 when Scott and I were moving my things from Florida to Vermont. This was a crazy time in my life..leaving the state that I grew up in and moving thousands of miles away. Even though I had moved away from home right after highschool for college…this was my first HUGE step on my own..and Scott was right by my side. I noticed this gap between the “You are now leaving North Carolina..come back soon!” and “Welcome to Virginia!” signs. It made me wonder who that gap belonged to. Where was the line that officially separated these two states? I called it limbo. Kinda how I feel right now between our new apartment and old apartment. We are working on our new apartment while sleeping at our old one..everything is scattered..doors are closing while others are opening. So much fresh hope and memories all at the same time..kind of like when you enter the border into a new state.

February 21st, 2010

So many people ask, “how did you even BEGIN doing what you love and how do you become successful doing it?”. Well first of all…I don’t think we are even close to defining ourselves as successful. That is something we would like to always be chasing after because it can always be better and we can always work harder. But how we began was by realizing how precious and amazing this life is! We have so many opportunities at our fingertips to allow us to actually chase after our dreams. Don’t take baby steps…run towards them scooping up as much information as you can on the way. Learn your craft and delve into it. Seek the passion and the drive and go with it..don’t be scared of it. Be true to yourself..I promise you only good things will come of this. And most of all..be kind to others and show the love! Listen to your heart, keep in mind the golden rules, and know you are capable of acheiving your wildest dreams. Just do it! Take that leap…it’s an exhilarating feeling that everyone deserves to feel. =)

It’s awesome to see this live and in action since first dreaming it up in June! Big shout out to Christie Noh for drawing up all the illustrations that play throughout the website!

Scott is a guy that wears many hats. We here in the Chrisman household like to keep ourselves busy and working hard! Scott makes the awesome videos for Floataway, works at a yoga studio in Studio City called The Yoga Shelter and also does behind the scenes videos for Kilkus Photography. Chris Kilkus is Forever 21/Heritage and all those sister brands main photographer and Scott tags along and creates fun videos for the companies to help show off and tell a story with their product! Every time he comes home I swoon over the stories he tells and get so jealous because I long to shoot lifestyle editorial one day.

I wanted to share with you a few of his videos because I just think they are amazing!

Something that we find very important is to keep ourselves inspired and motivated by our true passions in life other than our business. So Scott creating these behind the scenes videos, working in such a serene and inspiring place like The Yoga Shelter and me working with kids a couple days a week, definitely keep us going and helps us not to get burnt out or unmotivated from our biggest passion: Floataway. It is good to step away from what we work so hard on and have some fun in other fields of life..I promise you no matter what it is, it will always inspire and motivate you in whatever you are most passionate about.

Happy Wednesday everyone!

My week is organized in a little book with day by day lists of things I need to get done. I used to get these things done right on time..I sought the thrill of crossing that item off..even if it was “wake up and make bed” CHECK! “make protein shake” CHECK! “take Rilo for a walk” CHECK! I usually make these lists Sunday nights..and its now the time that I would begin planning my next moves for next week. As I thought about this I glanced at last weeks lists and laughed…I hardly got anything done! I could quite easily use last weeks list as this weeks…but the things I did get done are irreplaceable and too worthy of crossing off when done because they are ongoing practices that will receive a check mark the day I die. We are always planning our next move that sometimes we forget to enjoy the moment. 2010 has been so rewarding as of late due to the fact that I have learned to take care of myself before anyone else…so what if the items never get crossed off the list?

April 19th, 2010

Whenever I drive to San Diego, I always see the signs nearing Oceanside that there is a view point nearby that overlooks the ocean. Always being in a hurry to my destination, I never had time to stop and enjoy the view. Yesterday, on my way to San Diego for an engagement session I left a little earlier than usual so I could make this pit stop. It was amazing. Birds were flying down and retrieving peanuts from strangers hands, squirrals came out of the wood works to also enjoy the delicious snack, people were laughing and taking pictures and it made me so happy to watch everyone who just stopped at this view point to take a break from driving, from just thinking about getting to their destination and take a breath of fresh air and enjoy the little things that make life so important.

I remember the inquiry I received for Erins wedding last year, I remember speaking to her on the phone and just getting such a lovely vibe from this girl! Her family surprised her and Greg with booking their all time favorite photographers, One Love Photo, for their wedding and that made me love her and her family even more! We kept in touch..which is kinda rare with inquiring brides who don’t book you..haha…and I have had the amazing opportunity to photograph Erin and Greg a couple times..in a field in Topanga and under a fun Malibu tree…whenever I come up with a crazy idea..they are game and I love them for that!

Throughout the wedding planning process, Erin fell in love with everything about it and learned so much! She is now available to style your engagement session, weddings, and any other celebratory event!! Her style is one of a kind and she really focuses on telling a story..your story. I recommend to have Erin take care of your wedding details…it will truly be something no one has ever seen before! She keeps you involved so you still get to enjoy the fun process of coming up with creative ideas but she will help you take it one step further and relieve you of all possible stress that comes about when planning an event..especially a wedding!! Your wedding is about your love and your story…you focus on your love and Erin will help tell your story perfectly. Trust me, your wedding or event will be OUT OF THIS WORLD because she is THAT amazing at what she does! What makes her so amazing at it? Her passion…she truly is in love with making your wedding day the most amazing day of your life..one you will remember forever.

You know when you leave a movie and you are like “that was such a refreshing film”? Or when you find a new restaurant and you go wild about it because its new and you just want to try everything on the menu because it looks so amazing? I feel like everyday should be like that don’t you? I love when I feel like I know all the best spots and I get in my routine of favorite tv shows, author, bike/hike route, favorite shops, etc. and then I stumble upon something that just blows me out of the water! The feeling makes me giddy and it feels like I am opening my eyes again for the first time..whatever medium it may be. I have found myself getting comfortable in a daily routine, which part of me loves and another part of me is dying for change so I am on the hunt for some new “refreshments”…what are your favorites?

Elsie+Bobby

May 19th, 2010

Meet the Goodwins! Personally, one of my favorite last names in the world, it just has such an optimistic and cheerful vibe to the name, and that describes Bobby and Elsie perfectly! I have never been apart of a wedding where I have witnessed more genuine smiles from a bride and groom than Elsie and Bobby. These two were seriously made for one another and they couldn’t take their eyes off of each other all day! They had a small wedding at Hotel Laguna in Laguna Beach, California. It was intimate and they were surrounded by their closest family and closest friends…who were all sooo excited to be there to witness this amazing occasion! The weather was just like their last name.. both good and a win and they soaked everything in around them..every little detail! The way that Bobby looked at Elsie when she didn’t even know he was looking at her was beautiful and the way that Elsie stood proudly by her husbands side was the perfect fit. Congratulations you two!

Trust is the biggest gift a client can give us. Those people who believe in you from the minute they first make contact are beautiful blessings! Leah and Matt are that kind of blessing to us. When we first started speaking over e-mail about  capturing their wedding day on video, there were no questions about what we do, how we work and who we are. They learned all that in our portfolio and our brand..and then proceeded to relate to us and our work and all we had to do was figure out how to make it happen. It was such an HONOR to be commissioned  to travel to Pheonix, Arizona for Leah and Matts wedding. Upon meeting them for the first time, they really felt like old friends and we were so ecstatic to be there! They took the time to make sure everyone was having fun but also found the time to soak in their wedding day…observing everything and taking it all in with patience, love and kindness. Their wedding was had so many personal and creative aspects that you didn’t want the night to end! The love Leah and Matt hold for one another can obviously be seen in the teaser video below, it’s kind and endearing..the kind that lasts forever and ever. We are so happy for you Leah and Matt! Have fun in Ireland!!

The day I planned on visiting that Massachusetts river with my friend Derek, I never dreamt in my wildest dreams I would meet you. You hopped into the dirt road with your ears flopped behind, as we drove towards you listening to Rilo Kiley. We thought you were a lamb, and I was so excited to play with you. You were not a lamb…you were my dear sweet poodle…so happy, so healthy with no tags..you were one of my soul mates and this meeting, in the dirt road next to the river was meant to happen.

This mystery dog that no one was looking for, no one was claiming..you stole my heart. I feared that a family might be missing you but I so desperately wanted you to stay and enjoy lifes journeys with me. You got sick one day, shortly after I found you and it was so scary. We brought you to the emergency animal clinic at midnight, and when they told us it would cost about $3000 to confidently keep you alive, I was devastated. Even after only knowing you for 4 days, you really had a place in my heart. Luckily, a little fiber is all it took and on Memorial Day, you got all that nasty stuff that was hurting you out your system..and I did a little dance while eating my veggie burger by the lake with friends. You traveled across the country with me, you almost got us evicted in our first apartment because you missed us so much and weren’t afraid to let the neighbors know, you have allowed us to make so many friends everywhere we go because you are just so darn cute. I ache when I am not by your side and you have so much patience and love for me it’s ridiculous. When you chase after that light around the room trying to eat it, my sides hurt from laughing. When you jump for me to hold you when you get tired on our hikes, I can’t help but scoop you up. When you run to my side when you hear a carrot bag open, I can’t help but spoil you with these cute veggies.Your hugs and kisses are what keep me going everyday and I pray that everyone in their life can have a friend like you.

telling your story.

June 2nd, 2010

When we began Floataway Studios, just 6 months ago, we never dreamt we would have the opportunity to create something special and unique for fellow artists. When our good friend Amanda Rae approached us asking to do a promo video for her we agreed because we love her so much and it would be something new, and we like new. From Amandas video, we started to get inquiries to create special video for artists to help capture their personality and tell their story to their past, present and future clients. We have fallen in love with creating these special stories, because we know how important they are to your clients and your business and they are loads of fun!! I mean working with other artists who constantly inspire us? We live the dream!

Our approach to creating a promotional video for your blog or website is that we put our all into creating a video unique and special for you, that is different from the rest…because YOU are different from the rest. Out of the many photographers/artists we come across in our line of work, each person has something unique and special to offer and is very different from the last one. I love that!! We help custom create your very own story, in a fun and relaxed way, that your clients will already feel like your friend from day one.

Amanda Rae

“… I teamed up with Scott and Mary of Floataway Studios to create a promo video for my website. I originally wanted it to be like a commercial, a 30-second snippet of me in action so people can see some behind the scenes action. Well, the ideas started to flow and it ended up being a little bit longer than that. =) Thank you to Scott and Mary of Floataway Studios for being my amazing friends and for producing the video that until a few weeks ago only existed in my head…”

“…..Together, they make up a phenomenal team. With them behind the camera, it’s very easy to feel comfortable and beautiful. There’s no judgment, just lots of laughing and going with the flow. The finished product absolutely blew me away. They both understood my vision and there was minimal edits because they hit the nail on the head right off the bat. I absolutely adored working with them….”

“…i knew i wanted to take my website a whole new direction, and with that direction i wanted a modern approach to my promo video. i wanted to be able to portray my brand and how i interact with my clients a certain way and scott & mary told my story better than i could have ever imagined! i trusted them whole heartedly with my video and it was the best thing i could have done for my site =) …”

I always saw Hawaii as such a cliche vacation spot. When people who say they were going on their honeymoon to Hawaii, a part of me was like “really? out of everywhere tropical?”. That is really mean and hard to admit out loud but now I can say that…because I am wrong. I prejudged Hawaii. I would visit this state over and over and over again. I could float in the water, scoot around the land, eat Hawaiian cookies, hula dance, and say Mahalo all day long. I judged the commercialism of this beautiful location and it makes me wonder how many other things I am hesitant towards that are probably really super awesome! I have fallen in love with a location, with a culture and a lifestyle and I can’t wait to go back.

Jen+Toffy: A Mammoth Mountain Wedding

June 16th, 2010

Jen and Toffy are those people who you just want to know more. Their smiles, laughs, and sincere attention makes you want to move to a different state just to be their best friend. During their beautiful reception at the Parallax Restaurant at McCoy Station on Mammoth Mountain, Jens maid of honor said it so well…when you meet Jen for the first time you can’t help but be a bit jealous of her. She is drop dead gorgeous and her personality is to die for, but all jealousy goes out the door immediately because she is so humble and really one of kindest people you will ever meet, jealousy becomes gratitude for knowing this beautiful soul. Toffy is one of those laid back guys who can have a solid conversation with everyone in the room and is able to spend quality time getting to know someone. He is a gentlemen and treats Jen like a princess. The drive these two have to learn and soak up this beautiful world we live in is infectious and makes me so grateful to know them.

Friends and family gathered Memorial day weekend up in the beautiful mountains of Mammoth, California. Jen and Toffy made sure everyone was greeted with goodie bags that included snacks, water and an info pamphlet of the weekend. The pamphlet is just something so little that shows how big their hearts really are. The first page tells you how to adjust to the altitude and what to do if you get sick, the following pages include everyones numbers incase they need help, scheduled events such as hiking and yoga, directions and restaurant suggestions. HOW STINKIN SWEET RIGHT??! They went above and beyond to make sure their guests had the time of their life, goodie bags, champagne at the top of the gondola ride, yummy food and music…such a wonderful occasion to experience one of the best vacations of your life!

I loved everything about this wedding! I had been anticipating it for a whole year and the day it finally came, it was everything I imagined and beyond! Jen and Toffy dove head first into the creativity process and their vision for their wedding came out perfect! I love when couples get creative and get their hands dirty to make their wedding special…one of a kind. =) To make it even more one of a kind…Mammoth is where Jen and Toffy first met!

Congratulations Jen and Toffy! We were lucky enough to capture the video at this wedding as well, so stay tuned for that soon! Also, head over to GreyLikesWeddings to see a feature that summer did on Jen and Toffys special day!!

school love.

June 23rd, 2010

Sometimes I dream up things and I just know it is God giving me direction. For instance..once time I dreamt up the name Floataway for a studio name…now I can picture nothing else to title this passion of mine and other artists to provide happy couples with products that they can revisit the beginning chapter of their story over and over again. =)

Recently, I dreamt up a story, of a boy and girl involved in the classic (maybe cheesy) school love set up. =) The dream was a movie, so that is what we set up but in the midst of it I couldn’t help but taking a few snap shots of these two..they are so gorgeous right? When trying to envision the perfect couple for this shoot, Heather and Grayson are the only two lovebirds I could imagine in these vintage desks. We are so lucky, because they just happened to be in town to photograph a wedding and were up for this creative project. We had such an amazing time being in their company and I am so excited for how everything has turned out!

Video coming soon, but here are some pics for now. =)

It just takes one person to change a moment. To change a life. To change many lives. I am often touched by the good samaritans of the world, they inspire and push me to be a better person. I was moved by this story today, a man who has offered a listening ear and a helping hand to hurt souls who just needed to know someone was there for them. When I read stories like these, I pray that everyone would do the same, and if not, that it’s something that moves, inspires and changes them because it simply takes action to get something going..and if that thing could start off being common genuine courtesy..this world would be a better place.

Let’s start off with smiling at every stranger we see today…and if someone looks sad, lets show them that we are there for them…we are all in this together after all. =)
